Basic information

The term “personal data” is defined in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). According to the GDPR, all information associated with an identified or identifiable natural person (hereinafter “affected person”) falls under that definition. A natural person is considered identifiable if he or she can be identified directly or indirectly, especially through association with an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location information, an online ID, or one or more specific characteristics that reflect that natural person’s physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural, or social identity. This includes, for example, your name, your address, your phone number, and your date of birth.

When you use this website for informational purposes only—that is, without registering or otherwise submitting information to us—we only collect the personal data that your browser transmits to our servers. When you view our website, we collect the following data as a technical necessity to allow us to make the website visible to you, and to ensure its stability and security (the legal basis for this is legitimate interest as defined in Art. 6, Section 1, Page 1, Letter f of the GDPR).

In the context of weighing of interests as per Art. 6, Sec. 1, Letter f of the GDPR, we have considered and weighed our interest in providing the website against your interest in data protection-compliant processing of your personal data. Since the following data is sometimes technically required for us to be able to provide our service, to offer you our website, and to ensure the website’s stability and security, especially in terms of protecting against misuse, we have come to the conclusion that this data can be processed while maintaining a level of data security oriented to current levels of technology and duly accounting for your interest in data protection-compliant processing.

Forwarding data

Your personal data is not transmitted to third parties for purposes other than those listed.

We only pass your personal information on to third parties if:

  • You have given your express consent;
  • It is necessary in order to establish, exercise or defend legal claims, and there is no reason to presume that you have an overriding legitimate interest in the nondisclosure of your data;
  • It is the result of a legal obligation; or
  • It is legally permitted and necessary in order to process contractual relationships with you.

In the event data is transmitted outside of the European Union, the high European standard of data protection does not generally apply. In the event of such transmission, it may be that no EU Commission adequacy decision is in place within the meaning of Art. 45, Sec. 1, 3 of the GDPR. This means that the EU Commission has not yet positively established that the country-specific data protection level corresponds to the level established within the European Union on the basis of the GDPR; as such, we have put the above-named appropriate safeguards in place.

It may not be possible to completely rule out possible risks in connection with data transmission, especially:

  • Your personal data might be processed beyond what would be necessary for its actual purpose.
  • There is also the possibility that you may not be able to exercise and assert your data protection-related rights sustainably, such as your rights of access, rectification, deletion, or data portability.
  • There may also be a higher probability that incorrect data processing may occur, and that protecting your personal data does not quantitatively or qualitatively meet the full requirements of the GDPR.

Data security

We have taken extensive technical and operational precautions in order to protect your data against accidental or intentional manipulation, loss, destruction, or access by unauthorized persons. We regularly assess our security procedures and update them to reflect technological progress.

Cookies necessary for technical reasons

We use cookies to improve our web offer and to make use of the website as easy as possible for you. Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer when you visit our website, and make it possible to reidentify your browser. Cookies store information such as your language settings, the length of your visit to our page, and any information you entered in while visiting. This prevents you from having to reenter all of that information every time you visit. Cookies necessary for technical reasons are not necessary for displaying the website. Without these cookies, however, some of the functions of the website cannot be used properly.

As such, users have no option to revoke this permission; however, these cookies can be deactivated by adjusting the appropriate setting in the browser. Most browsers allow cookies automatically. If you would like to prevent cookies from being stored on your device, you can change your browser settings to “do not accept cookies”. Refer to the information provided by your browser manufacturer for more information on how exactly this works. Cookies that have already been stored on your computer can be deleted at any time. However, we wish to point out that our web services are only usable to a limited extent without cookies.

Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analysis service provided by Google Inc. (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA – “Google”).

Google Analytics uses so-called “cookies”, which are text files stored on your computer that allow analysis of your use of the website. Generally, the information generated by the cookie regarding your use of this site is transmitted to a Google server in the USA and stored there. In cases where IP anonymization is activated on this website, however, Google will first truncate your IP address within member states of the European Union or in other Contracting States to the European Economic Area Agreement. Only in exceptional cases will your full IP address be transmitted to a Google server in the USA and truncated there. The IP address transmitted from your browser in the context of Google Analytics will not be combined with other Google data. On behalf of the operator of this website, Google will use this information to evaluate your use of the website, to generate reports about website activities, and to provide other website and Internet usage-related services to the site operator. For these purposes, we also have a legitimate interest in data processing. Sec. 15, Para. 3 of the German Telemedia Act (TMG) and Art. 6, Sec. 1, Letter f of the GDPR form the legal basis for our usage of Google Analytics. The data we transmit and link with cookies, user identifiers (e.g., user IDs), or advertising IDs will be deleted automatically after 14 months. Data whose retention time has expired is deleted automatically once a month. For more information on terms of use and data protection, please visit https://www.google.com/analytics/terms/us.html or https://policies.google.com/.

You can change your browser software to prevent cookies from being stored on your computer; however, we wish to advise you that this may prevent you from using all website functions to their full extent. You also have the option of preventing the data generated by the cookie related to your use of the website (incl. your IP address) from being collected or processed by Google; to do this, download and install the Browser add-on. Opt-out cookies prevent future collection of your data when you visit this website. Click here to set the opt-out cookie: Deactivate Google Analytics

Google Tag Manager

For reasons of transparency, we would like to point out that we use Google Tag Manager. Google Tag Manager itself collects no personal data. Tag Manager makes it easier to integrate and manage our tags. Tags are small elements of code which help to, among other things, measure traffic and visitor behavior, work out the effect of online advertising and social channels, organize remarketing and focusing on target groups and test and optimize websites. We use Tag Manager for the Google services Google Analytics and Google Adsense. If you have deactivated anything, Google Tag Manager will account for this. For further information on Google Tag Manager, see: https://www.google.com/analytics/tag-manager/use-policy/

Facebook Custom Audience

“We use the Custom Audiences service of Facebook Inc. as part of our usage-based online advertising. (1601 S. California Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA). For this purpose, we use the Facebook Ad Manager to define user target groups based on certain features that are subsequently displayed ads within the Facebook network. Users are selected by Facebook based on the profile information they provide and other information provided through the use of Facebook. If a user clicks on an advertisement and then visits our website, Facebook receives information from the Facebook pixel embedded on our website that the user clicked on the advertising banner. In principle, a non-reversible and non-personal checksum (hash value) is generated from your usage data and transmitted to Facebook for analysis and marketing purposes. A Facebook cookie is set. This collects information about your activities on our website (e.g. surfing behaviour, subpages visited, etc.). In addition, your IP address is stored and used for the geographical control of advertising. We do not use Facebook Custom Audiences via the customer list or the “extended comparison” function.

The legal basis for the processing is your voluntary consent within the meaning of Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a) GDPR. You can revoke your consent at any time with effect for the future by using either the button provided here to deactivate Facebook Custom Audience or the button at the beginning of the data protection declaration to generally revoke your consent to the use of cookies and pixels.

Further information about the purpose and scope of the data collection and the further processing and use of the data by Facebook as well as your setting options to protect your privacy can be found in Facebook’s data protection guidelines. You can make settings about which advertisements you see on Facebook under this link and in Facebook’s account settings.

The transfer of data to the USA is permitted according to Art. 45 DSGVO, as Facebook is Privacy Shield-certified and therefore an adequate level of data protection exists according to the implementing decision of the Commission (EU) 2016/1250 ( https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32016D1250&from=EN ). Certification can be viewed at https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt0000000GnywAAC&status=Active .

You can revoke your previously given consent at any time with effect for the future by clicking on the following link:

This shall not affect the lawfulness of the processing carried out on the basis of consent until revoked. No further data exchange with Facebook takes place with the declared revocation.

Votely

We use the wpgens.com PlugIn Votely to conduct short surveys (with two possible answers) within our articles. The PlugIn is operated exclusively on our servers in Germany and does not establish a connection to the site of a third party provider. If you do not participate in the survey, no data from you will be processed by the PlugIn. If you click on one of the answers, your choice will be saved without allocation to a pseudonym or your IP address. Only the country from which you cast your vote is recorded. In addition, participation in the survey sets a cookie in your browser that allows the browser to be uniquely identified when you return to the website and contains the information that you have already participated in the survey. In this way, we prevent falsification/abuse of the survey by preventing multiple voting. This is also our legitimate interest pursuant to Art. 6 para. 1 lit f) DSGVO. The cookie is stored for a period of 1 year from the time you cast your vote.

Incorporation of third-party content

Our website incorporates third-party content, such as YouTube or Instagram videos, on the basis of Art. 6, Sec. 1, Sentence 1, Letter f of the GDPR. This always requires that the providers of this content (hereinafter referred to as “third-party providers”) receive the user’s IP address, because without an IP address, they are not able to transmit content to the user’s browser. As such, user IP addresses are necessary to displaying this content. We strive to employ only content provided by sources that only use IP addresses for purposes of content delivery. However, we have no influence on whether third-party providers store IP addresses, for example for statistical purposes. We notify our users to the extent that we are aware of such practices.
